Will iconic images recorded in the grooves of an ancient vase unite the Holy Land or rip it further apart?
THE VASE
A novel by Mark M. DeRobertis
Muhsin Muhabi is a Palestinian potter, descended from a long line of potters. His business is run from the same shop owned by his ancestors since the day his forebears moved to Nazareth. The region's conflict saw the death of his oldest son, and rogue terrorists are in the process of recruiting his youngest in their plot to assassinate the Pope and Israeli prime minister.
Professor Hiram Weiss is an art historian at Nazareth’s Bethel University. He is also a Shin Bet operative on special assignment. With the help of fellow agent, Captain Benny Mathias, he plans to destroy the gang responsible for the death of his wife and only child. He puts a bomb in the ancient vase he takes on loan from Muhsin’s Pottery Shop.
Mary Levin, the charming assistant to the director of Shin Bet, has lost a husband and most of her extended family to recurring wars and never-ending terrorism. She dedicates her life to the preservation of Israel, but to whom will she dedicate her heart? The brilliant professor from Bethel University? Or the gallant captain who now leads Kidon?
Harvey Holmes, the Sherlock of Haunted Houses, is a Hollywood TV host whose reality show just flopped. When a Lebanese restaurant owner requests his ghost-hunting services, he believes the opportunity will resurrect his career. All he has to do is exorcise the ghosts that are haunting the restaurant. It happens to be located right across the street from Muhsin’s Pottery Shop.

TIme to start planning new book
I most definitely want to do that. I even have a tentative title: The Killers Guild. This summer what I expect to do is proceed with the publisher's editing of Killer Eyes. And maybe proceed with the revisions to Second Chance. If I get a break, maybe I can proceed with a publisher's editing of John Dunn, too. That's three books all being polished at the same time.
But Book Three to the Killer series is going to happen. Eventually. And now that Book Two is being published, I suppose it's time to start. I did leave room for a Book Three. And besides, Trent Smith is my favorite character. Along with Conan, James Bond, and Captain Kirk. So this summer might be the best time to start the third book in the series. Or at least start with some kind of outline. Then maybe when school starts again, I'll have something to go by. We'll see.

Killer Eyes, the Sequel to Killer of Killers
Almost all of the reviewers who've read and reviewed Killer of Killers had mentioned that a sequel or "Book Two" was necessary. They said they hoped a Book Two was in the works. They had said that there were some things that still needed to be resolved and they wanted to see them resolved.
Well, Killer Eyes is it. It's Book Two in what I'm calling the Killer Series. Killer Eyes, a Trent Smith Martial Arts Thriller, Book Two in the Killer Series, to be exact is how I've headed this next book.
So, yeah, I would like this to be a series of books. And these first two books, really is the same continuing story. It's like Killer Eyes picks up where Killer of Killers left off. Even though Killer of Killers is a stand alone story, as is Killer Eyes, they are very much chronologically written. And therefore should be chronologically read.
As for a book three? Yes, I'd like to write book three this summer. My WIPs are finished. Or at least will be by this summer. Those WIPs included Killer Eyes, which has only the publishing edits to go, John Dunn, which also has the publishing edits to go, and the completion of the first draft of Second Chance is imminent. It should be wrapped up by the time my school is out for the summer.
And that means my "writing time" during this summer will be used for a brand new start for a brand new book, and that book is going to be Book Three in the Killer Series. Tentatively called The Killers Guild. So yeah, my Killer Series should have the word "killer" in every title. Thus, the "Killer Series" of course. How many books will that include? Well, at least three. After that? We'll see.

The Killers Guild
So if the Killers Guild is introduced in Killer Eyes, why are they back in The Killers Guild? Indeed, even the book is named after them. Well, for one thing, I think that The Killers Guild is a cool title. So much so that I almost renamed Killer Eyes The Killers Guild. I didn't, ultimately, which left me with one option: write another book and call that one The Killers Guild.
Killer Eyes is a continuing story, picking up where Killer of Killers left off. And it was pretty much wrapped up at the end of Killer Eyes. Or was it? Well, it was, until, that is, I revised it. I have put in a very surprising denouement, or resolution, which can be continued, like before, in another book, and taken in any direction I want. I haven't really decided just what direction the third Killer book will take, but one thing I know: it will involve the return of The Killers Guild--a more powerful and much more ambitious Killers Guild.
And that means more killing for Trent Smith. But it also means more killers trying to kill Trent Smith. One thing about Trent Smith is that he works alone. Or at least he intends to work alone. In Killer Eyes, he does get some unexpected help, but I can't say any more about that. No spoilers allowed here. Can't wait for Killer Eyes to get released. Then I can't wait to write The Killers Guild. Just talking about it here on the blog is getting me pumped to get started. Stay tuned.

Buy the Books!
Now if all those people actually READ the blog, who's to say? Because most of those countries don't speak or read English. That doesn't mean the people who come to this blog don't read English, They probably do, otherwise why are they going to blogs that are in English?
So that's great, but I hope they are buying my two available books, too. That's the purpose behind the blog. To promote my books. And that means prompting sales. Killer of Killers and The Vase are very entertaining stories. They are a lot of fun to read. Easy to read. Thrilling, even. Killer of Killers is action packed, but it's not just about action. It has philosophy and intrigue, romance and tragedy. The Vase has suspense and intrigue, romance and tragedy, too, and is set in Israel. It deals with Shin Bet and Hamas, both of whom are conspiring against each other in the story.
There is a religious element in The Vase, but it's not a religious book. Not at all. That religious element I referred to is only there because some of the characters in the story are religious. But the book doesn't promote religion. I wouldn't want to read a book like that, and The Vase is NOT like that. But it does have a great premise, meaning the vase in the story is an ancient one and has ancient images recorded in its grooves that get projected when the potter spins it and puts a metal tool into the grooves, thinking he is cleaning it. But the tool acts like a stylus and the grooves in the vase are like grooves in a vinyl record, thus images and sounds are projected.
Now that's the premise behind The Vase. But it's got a lot more going on than that. In fact all of my books do. And my upcoming ones, Killer Eyes and John Dunn, which I've begun revising last night have a lot going for them.
But I suggest you start with Killer of Killers and The Vase. By the time you've finished reading them, Killer Eyes may be ready. It's a great follow up to KOK. Then John Dunn. And Second Chance, my fifth novel should be completed by next year. And then, The Killers Guild, which will be my sixth book, but it will be the third and possibly the final entry of the Killer series.
But it all starts with Killer of Killers and The Vase. Buy them today!

Summer Vacation--What to Write?
So far I have a good start on Second Chance, mostly due to the inspiration I received from that dream I mentioned on the blog back when I had it. It was in May I think. I dreamed of a new story, and then the following day I wrote the synopsis/outline, which I based on that dream, and for the rest of the week I tweaked that synopsis. But since I was so motivated or inspired by that story, I went ahead and started writing it. I wrote most of what will probably be chapter one, about 3500 words or so, and I really like the way it turned out.
But I'm now back to finishing the revisions to Killer Eyes, and I've put Second Chance aside to do it. And I think I should. Killer Eyes, in its current state, was filled with too many holes, too many inconsistencies, too many loose strings. I had written it over the course of about two and a half months during one of my summer vacations a couple years ago, before Killer of Killers was even published. And I wrapped up the first draft not even knowing if Killer of Killers would ever get published. But now that it is, and Killer Eyes will follow, I'm making sure that it is just as good, just as well written, and just as consistent.
In fact, in many ways, Killer Eyes is proving to be better, which it should be. I'm not saying it IS better, just in many ways it could be considered better. Why? Well, there's more action, more killing, and more blood. In fact it's a much more violent and intense story than the first one, and it's not that way because I wanted it to be. It just turned out that way.
You see, for my Killer books, I just let the stories go where they went, like I was just the observer, like if I was watching a movie in a theater. I didn't even write an outline for the first one. And even though I did for the second one, it still went where it wanted to go. Like I've said before, it's not as violent or as gory as a Quentin Tarrantino movie, or like the STARZ show Spartacus, but it is violent, and it is bloody. At least some parts of it are. And again, I didn't exactly want that. It just happened.
When it's released, and you read it, you'll see what I mean. It should be out by the end of the year. Cant wait. As for what I'm going to write this summer after the revisions to Killer Eyes are done? What I'm hoping is that I'll stay in the Trent Smith mindset and proceed with The Killers Guild. That's the plan, although every writer knows that the best laid plans do go awry. We'll see.

Killer Eyes Almost Ready, but...
I even almost changed the title of Killer Eyes to The Killers Guild, but ultimately I decided to retain the title Killer Eyes. And for the third book I have a good idea just what the story will be about. Yes, it will be the continuing adventures of Trent Smith, but it will also have to deal directly with those issues brought up in Killer Eyes that were left unresolved. Understand I did it on purpose. I fixed those problems I talked about, but in doing so it left a subplot that starts in Killer Eyes, but is not wrapped up. That's where the third story will go. Wrapping that up. And the third book should wrap up the Trent Smith saga.
But that's not final. Who knows? I may keep going. That's what series do, of course. Bottom line, there will be at least three. And then we'll see.

New Book-Killer Eyes-a Thrilling Ride
But when will that be? Not sure. I am only sure that I will write it. And maybe next. I did get the recent epiphany for a new story, as I've posted this week. And I may undertake that one first. But even so, the third Killer book will get written, and I am as excited about that as I've ever been. Maybe even more so, because this character, Trent Smith, is my all time favorite character. He's a great character.
As a youth, I was always a fan of that ultra cool, ultra great character as portrayed in books, movies, or even TV shows. Indeed, my all time favorite characters include:
1-Conan, as written by Robert E. Howard in his Conan books-NOT the Conan we saw in the movies or TV shows.
2-James Bond, as portrayed by Sean Connery in the movies. One of the rare examples where the movies were better than the book.
3-Captain James T. Kirk, as portrayed in the TV show Star Trek, TOS--not the movies with the original cast, (they sucked) nor the reboot movies which, to me, totally sucked.
And sure, there's more, like James West, from the TV show The Wild, Wild West, and The Man With No Name, as portrayed by Clint Eastwood in his three spaghetti western movies. And there are more.
Trent Smith in Killer of Killers is up there with those guys. I had that specifically in mind when I invented the character. He had to be a character who was the best at what he does. And when it comes to martial arts, hand to hand combat, bare knuckle fighting, etc. he is without peer. Clearly the first book, Killer of Killers, demonstrates this. In the second book, Killer Eyes, he uses swords. And in the third book, tentatively titled The Killers Guild, the story comes full circle, with empty hands fighting, and events that will establish him without a doubt as the world's best empty hands fighter.
So let me get Killer Eyes polished up and I'll proceed with my new books. It just takes a couple more read throughs, which of course depends on the home front allowing me the time to do that. It's a matter of sitting down and doing it. Which is what I intend to keep on doing.

Killer Eyes--Revisions Completed!
How that happened? Who knows. It's the first time I've seen it. No, actually, I have seen it before. Nevertheless, it just goes to show that there is no minimum or maximum number of times you can proofread your manuscript. No matter how many times you do it, there's always going to be something you'll find that needs correcting or improving.
But the big news here is that the subplot and supporting character action I was worried about has finally been fixed. When you have a character doing something, there should be a reason why he/she is doing it. And when that character does something else in the climax, it better not conflict with what he/she was doing throughout the story line. That's what was troubling me for the past couple of months, and finally, that's what I fixed.
It took some rewriting, but that's what I'm celebrating now, that rewriting got done, and I'm calling the story complete. So after this read-through/proof reading, and one more after, THAT'S when I'll submit. And my Killer of Killers book on the Melange Books website will finally have its sequel.
Then, on with the John Dunn revisions, and hopefully the writing of my new book, Second Chance. And I haven't forgotten the third book in the Killer Series. And I still have every intention of writing my MG/YA novel, also.
So here's what's in queue: Revising the fourth book I've already written--John Dunn, and then three more books to write from scratch-- the third Killer book, tentatively titled The Killers Guild, and then my new story, tentatively titled Second Chance, and the YA book which I'm pretty sure will be titled Inside the Outhouse.
After all of that, maybe I'll get back to the Sci-Fi book I began years ago as a graphic novel. Now that will be interesting. Maybe I'll keep it as a graphic novel. We'll see.

Killer Eyes vs. The Killers Guild
But since a Killers Guild is perhaps the main antagonistic presence in the second sequel, which is already written, btw, that's why I'm considering just naming that one The Killers Guild.
But you've got to read Killer of Killers first, anyway, because the second book is really a continuation to that story. It's more like "Part Two" of Killer of Killers more than a sequel. It takes up where Killer of Killers leaves off. Although both stories are complete unto themselves, or stand alone stories. It would be better to read the one after the other though. That would be for optimal enjoyment, that is. So stop wasting time. Buy your copy of Killer of Killers today, so you'll be ready for Killer Eyes. Or The Killers Guild. I better make up my mind. Well, it will be one or the other.

Now is TIme to BUY Killer of Killers! The Vase, too, btw
Not that it was a disaster before, but it didn't meet the standards I had reached after the editing to The Vase at Penumbra Publishing. Fortunately Melange Books was on board with bringing those standards up to my newfound expectations, and after three months of constant upgrading, meaning revisions to the above specifics of focused improvement, Killer of Killers, the second edition is ready for all comers!
So that means no more waiting! Anyone and everyone who might have been inclined to buy a copy, well, now's the time to act on that inclination! I'm busy with the sequel right now, even though it's already done, just working on revisions now, but Killer of Killers is ready to be bought, to be read, to be thoroughly enjoyed, and I dare say, ready for any and all reviews. I am confident it will hold up to any potential criticisms, and pass all expectations of literary standards and creative storytelling. (The storytelling, actually was always there.)
So don't wait on it. Let me know what you think. I'm game. I'm ready. Even for suggestions or for what people might want to see in the sequel. Slip me a note. Let me know. Maybe I'll put it in there. I always add stuff during the revisions stages anyway. I did it for both Killer of Killers and The Vase. I could do it for Killer Eyes, too Or The Killers Guild. Not sure about the title yet. That's another thing that might change. But we'll see.
In the meantime, click on images to the right. Don't be a faker. Buy one or both books today. Not tomorrow, because tomorrow's already here!

Now What? Keep Writing--But...
Regardless, there is something else that is just as important as a commitment to writing. And that is promoting your work. I've promoted both Killer of Killers and The Vase since publication, but there is so much more I can do. I've decided that it will be necessary to get free books to people who would be most likely to enjoy the books, but people who are also in a position to see those books made available to others who would be likely to buy them.
The most obvious people are people in book stores. Meaning the people who own, run, or work in bookstores. I'll have to have a small collection of my books and take them to these people. Tell them about the books, let them have a free copy, and hope that they will take the time to read them. Once they do, I'm confident they will enjoy the stories and then order some copies to sell in their bookstore.
So, yeah. That's my next step. Just as soon as I get my copies from Melange. I'll keep you posted on that progress.

Second Sequel to Killer of Killers
But I've told them since, and they are expecting the manuscript this month, because I told them it should be ready by this month. And I think it will be, because I actually wrote it a couple years ago. I just didn't start revising it until recently. And it's getting there. One of the things I concentrated on was this POV thing. I learned about it from Melange, but it was Penumbra Publishing who really drove the point home to me. And that was during the rewrite of The Vase. Can't wait to see how their editors feel about how it is now.
But with the Killer of Killers story, the sequel, Killer Eyes, not only continues where Killer of Killers left off, it actually wraps up that particular story arc. All the questions are answered, and all the conflict is resolved. And the reason I did that was because I wasn't sure Killer of Killers was ever going to be published, and I didn't want to keep writing sequels to a book or books that would never see print.
My mistake. I should have had more confidence in that story, since it DID get published, and the sequels will be, too. But so far there is only one sequel. Which brings me to the title of this post. The second sequel. I wanted to call it The Killers Guild, or use a title that has Killer in it. Then it could be referred to as the Killer Trilogy.
The Killers Guild is a club of killers, obviously, professional assassins, actually, and Trent Smith, the main character kills them all in Killer Eyes. So if they're all killed, how can I have another book called The Killers Guild? Well, they're reformed. That's how. By whom? Well, that's a good question, and I'm still figuring it out. Hey, I haven't written it yet. Let me finish Killer Eyes first, and then I'll write that one. But I'm thinking about it.

Killer of Killers, Killer Eyes, The Killers Guild
It will deal with Trent Smith's search for justice in another way. He'll go back to Japan, but for a tournament. But this tournament is not the same kind of tournament he is used to. Instead of a fighting tournament, it's a killing tournament, as in each bout will be to the death. And since he's the killer of killers, then he will be a suitable contestant. At least that's what the recruiters will tell him. And he'll believe it, too. Just thinking out loud. I plan on beginning soon.

Other Journey Continues
My goal is to have Melange publish the Killer of Killers books, meaning Killer of Killers and the two sequels I have planned. And another publisher publish The Vase and even John Dunn. But goals sometime must be adjusted to accommodate reality and/or alternate plans. So it's a 'we'll see' type of thing.
In the meantime, I will get back to perfecting Killer Eyes, and maybe outline The Killers Guild. I have learned so much about formatting and POV and making a manuscript the way it should be when Killer of Killers got published. And I don't want to be making last second changes for that one. When it's at he level of Killer of Killers, then I will submit it to Melange.
Same thing for The Vase. But that one's already there.

Journey Completed
It was a strange journey in many ways. I had written Killer of Killers first, but it seemed for a while that The Vase was going to get published first, thus the name of the blog. But two publishers failed to publish it, and I am hesitant to go with the other two who said they would.
I haven't proposed it to Melange yet. I thought maybe it's better to have more than one publisher, but I'm not sure about that any more. The other publishers who were supposed to be reviewing The Vase seem to be taking their time. And that is to be expected. I was spoiled there for a minute when Melange offered a contract the day after I submitted the full ms.
So yeah, that was definitely the exception to the rule. You better be prepared to wait for months to hear back from a publisher, and that's what I've been doing for The Vase.
But if this year ends with no word, I think I will submit The Vase to Melange. I know they will publish Killer Eyes. I told them about it, and they were interested. They should be. It wraps up the story from Killer of Killers. If I ever do write The Killers Guild, it will be more like an addendum to the story or a sequel. Still it will be connected to the story, more so than being just another episode in the life of Trent Smith. But one thing I better make sure of is that it is as exciting and adventurous as the first two. Well, it will be. Don't worry about that.

KOK Part 3 in the Works
The preliminary title of KOK 3 will be THE KILLERS GUILD. The Killers Guild is actually introduced in KILLER EYES, and I don't want to give away any spoilers, but by the end of that story a reader might think it's a done deal. That's because I wrote it before KOK was offered a contract. And I wasn't even sure it would ever get published. And as I've explained before, I didn't want to keep writing books in a series that wasn't going to see print. So I made the ending one that could be a wrap. But I've got a few surprises in store. And now that KOK is getting published, I figure to at least go with a third installment.
Yes, it's time for THE KILLERS GUILD to get its own book. And title.
